Obviously, all hard drives are going to die eventually, but there could be things you are doing that lessen the life of your hard drive. For example, the most common way a hard drive will go prematurely is if the inside suffers from overheating. Below is a list of the most common ways you may be ruining the life of your hard drive.

Not Keeping the Inside of your Computer Clean
It is a fact that computers will accumulate dust, which in turn can keep the heat inside your computer. This could be either by blocking the flow of hot air out or bringing heat in and then trapping it in. It can be difficult to clean your computer’s insides without harming its sensitive parts, so the best way to remove the dust is to use canned air. Also, be sure dust has not collected in the vents themselves.

Blocking Ventilation
Never allow your vents to be blocked by anything, even if just a little bit. By doing something like pushing your computer up against a wall, your computer is going to build up heat inside. Also, try not to place your laptop on a soft surface like a bed or sofa. This will bury the vents, causing heat to build up inside. It is best to keep at least 1 foot between and vents and any obstructions.

Ignoring Cooling System Warnings
The cooling system pushing hot air out of the computer, so keeping it operational is very important for long term health of your hard drive. A computer can sometimes detect when the cooling system is not working and those warnings should not be ignored. Another way you can tell if your cooling system is not working is to pay attention to whether or not the computer is hot or if the fan is not working. Also, if you are using your computer, but your fan seems to be working extremely hard, that is also a sign of overheating.

Keeping it in a Hot/Dry Environment
If you put your computer in a place where the air is warmer than room temperature, you are not helping your cooling system at all. I would not recommend putting the computer next to a fireplace or heater, as well as having several computers right next to one another. This can cause one computer’s hot air to be passed through another computer.

Leaving your Computer Case Open
It seems as though it would make sense to open your computer case, but actually this disrupts the cooling system that is specified to cool down you computer. Also, the case protects the innards for dust and dirt. Nothing conflicts with the hard drive like an open computer case.

If your hard drive seems to be overheating, make sure you call a specialist to fix your cooling system. If this problem goes untreated, you could lose your hard drive, which in turn can delete all of your data and in some cases you may not be able to get it back.
